Our Story

At Dr. Paula Barata’s research lab, we are passionately dedicated to addressing gender-based violence and inequalities. Our work is driven by a deep commitment to understanding the complex issues that impact those who experience gender-based violence and discrimination. We believe that rigorous research is a powerful tool for creating meaningful change, and we are devoted to using our findings to inform and influence policies, programs, and practices that support survivors and promote gender equity.

Our research team is as diverse as the communities we serve. We are a collective of researchers from varied backgrounds, each bringing unique perspectives and experiences to our work. This diversity strengthens our research, allowing us to approach complex issues with a rich understanding of the many ways in which gender-based violence and inequality manifest across different populations.

Our research spans a variety of critical areas, all aimed at improving the lives of those affected by gender-based violence and inequality:

  • Implementing a Sexual Violence Prevention Program: We collaborate with the Sexual Assault Resistance Education (SARE) https://www.sarecentre.org/ Centre to develop and evaluate effective strategies for preventing sexual violence. Our goal is to empower individuals and communities with the tools they need to prevent violence before it occurs.
  • Investigating Sexual Coercion in Intimate Relationships: Understanding the dynamics of sexual coercion within intimate relationships is crucial to addressing this pervasive issue. Our research explores the psychological, social, and cultural factors that contribute to sexual coercion, with the aim of developing interventions that protect and support those at risk.
  • Examining Self-Compassion, Shame, and Self-Blame in Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence: We explore the complex emotional landscapes of survivors of intimate partner violence, focusing on how self-compassion, shame, and self-blame impact their healing journeys. Our research seeks to identify pathways to resilience and recovery for survivors.
  • Studying Housing Issues that Impact Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence: Safe and secure housing is essential for survivors of intimate partner violence. Our research investigates the barriers that battered women face in securing housing, with the goal of informing policies that ensure all survivors have access to safe living environments.

Through these research projects, we strive to contribute to a world where all individuals, regardless of gender, can live free from violence and discrimination. We invite you to explore our work, engage with our findings, and join us in the pursuit of justice, equity, and healing for those who have been marginalized and harmed by gender-based violence. Together, we can make a difference.
